6 pearls of wisdom for 12 year old Me

I am in Canada. I spent a week of:

  • making new friends
  • cycling obscenely in a bridesmaid dress, heels in hand, at daytime and in the dark with no street- nor bicycle lights on an island. I can give all the girls in the retro movies a run for its money.
  • drinking some wine and beer / smoking a cigar with – God forbid – Irish men
  • dancing for hours
  • standing tall as a bridesmaid at the beach ceremony
  • listening to best speeches
  • doing workouts at the beach and in a CrossFit gym
  • hugging everybody
  • laughing more and louder than seems humanly possible
  • leading hysterical and lively debates in English on a road trip with lovely strangers who became friends and in a hotel suite full of bridemaids
  • sitting right next to the bride at the party. I love my Canadian Bestie. I’d fly anywhere in the world for her.

All of this pleases me to no end.

But now, let’s see what is left in the recesses of my brain after all the wedding shenanigans and start playing.

Despite being clumsy, impulsive, loud and inappropriate, I admit that I feel filled to the brim with prowess – almost as much with wisdom. Whereas the latter not so much, because who am I, calling myself a wise-ass when not even having given birth to a child or not been to famous Matterhorn in my own effing country. Suffice to say, no higher education entitles me to think that way, but well, confidence must be a virtue and seems legit.

Anyhow, in an overdose of pure and selfless generosity, I decided to give the girl I once was, some great, law-abiding and well considerate, inappropriate morsels of life advice. Being in charge of 13-19 years old teenager kids at my job, I feel this might be a good practise for my real life situation.

Celebrate – while you still can. Laughing, dancing, kissing, hugging, soaking up good energy vibes – that is where life explodes in a beautiful firework and we should spark it as much as possible.

Find your passion and follow that path. Not an easy one. It took me years to feel what passion actually feels like. You need to LET passion find its way to you. Let go of blockades in form of fear, concern, worries. Let inspiration evolve and find its way to your soul. When you found your passion, you will know it. It is the thing that lets you forget to eat, pee and sleep. Maybe that’s just me with my overdose of recklessness and love for extremes, but yes – passion outshines everything else. If you manage to include it in your life as much as possible, I promise you, you will get to know yourself so well, that you find a way to become a happy person.

Give yourself a hug. Every single day. If hugging yourself doesn’t float your boat – and I cannot blame you for that, because it does seem awkward when we think about it – make it symbolic. Dress in your favorite outfit and like what you see in the mirror. Take time to braid your hair. Buy a book for yourself. Take a nap and dedicate it to your hard work. Smile at yourself in the mirror. Whatever makes you happy – do one little thing a day just for you. Yes, YOU deserve it. If you cannot make yourself happy, who do you want to then.

It is not important what people say or think about you. Such an old one. Such a good one. In all honesty – I can fit in in any kind of groups of people and feel fine. Primarily, because I still stay the way I am and don’t care about if I am different and let others be different too. Because most of the times I am. And that’s fine. It doesn’t mean that only because two people are different that they cannot get along. Sometimes the most different persons are becoming the best friends. Stop judging and forget the judgers. Own who you are, but be open to learn, grow and maybe change. Life happens to all of us and it is ok to not be where we want to be yet right now.

Do full-ass. It’s ok to half-ass things that are not priority to you. The order in my closet is a half-ass thing, because I simply don’t give a damn if the black shirts are in a mess with the colored ones. I can’t be bothered. I also have no problem with my lack of administrative skills in my private paper zoo. BUT – when it comes to my job, my friendships and my passions, I am there – 150%. I take it nothing but seriously and I give all I have for the profession I chose to safe my existence, the people I chose to be my friends and the hobbies (training, photographing, writing and traveling) I chose to be my happiness. The results of being committed 100% are the satisfying reward of working hard and with joy. It’s and effort that feels effortless and that is worth every single push of energy.

Make your day, every day. Mackenzie Beach, Tofino Vancouverisland, Canada, August 2016

Live carefree and curious – and be grateful for life. No one said it’s going to be easy, but in general, the majority of us – me, you, my readers and your family and friends, are blessed with a privileged life. Most of the time there aren’t many reasons to whine, to worry or to complain. Soak up the happy moments, go out and watch the beauty of this world and appreciate and learn from what you have. Help and support the ones who are not as privileged and stop worrying over the little things and the things you cannot change. Accept, have respect, stay curious and open to what life has in store for you. The moment you start isolating yourself with stubborn plans, fear, envy or jealousy, the exciting experience of life will skip your door and will turn to the ones who are dancing on the dance floor of adventure.
